Jon Stewart - neocons use Pope's death for political gain - (VIDEO)
April 7, 2005

On the April 7th Daily Show, John Stewart points out how Bush and many other Republicans are using the Pope's death for political gain.

There is also a short rant by Lewis Black that has a funny Mel Gibson punchline.

61. Broadcast MSM is so screwed up sometimes it's pathetic....
... when it's not enraging, that is.

I watched the Pope's funeral mass last night, and since I didn't know CSPAN was covering it I watched CNN. It was the Italian newsfeed on nearly all stations (as I discovered) and their cameras gave a lot of time to the arriving dignitaries.

I was absolutely staggered at the sheer breadth of international humanity who were on hand to pay their respects -- I expected the European heads of state, and of course Chimpy, but there were Islamic heads of state, Israeli heads of state, priests from the far reaches of the Byzantine churches not in communion with Rome since the Great Schism a thousand years ago, the retired Chief Rabbi of Rome, and at least one Buddhist monk in an off-the-shoulder saffron robe.

I was playing "name that face" pretty well without any help from the wits at CNN, but Anderson Cooper was babbling, just babbling. Every so often Christiane Amanpour would interject an item of actual information, but then AC would start in again. I started muttering "shut up, shut up" but when AC saw Our Dear Leader he intoned "And of course, they are Both Men of Faith," at which point I lost it and said "Kiss my *!" Which is probably some kind of sin while watching the run-up to the Pope's funeral mass. (Father, forgive me for not being more sorry for saying that to Anderson Cooper.)

I tried MSNBC and for the rest of the night did pretty well. I am sorry I didn't think to turn to CSPAN though, as I appreciate their willingness to let events unfold by themselves without unnecessary commentary. Or as my late dad used to say, "talking just to hear yourself talk."

Jimmy Carter, Nobel Peace Laureate and former US president, was emphatically not there, as all DUers know by now, and it was a shame that no one in the broadcast MSM seemed inclined to even notice that fact, much less analyze the sheer pettiness and petulance of the Bush family when they feel criticized.

As to my impression that the official representatives of nearly every nation and creed who showed up, perhaps James Carroll said it best in his back-page essay "The Pope's True Revolution" in Time magazine (April 11 2005, commemorative issue, no url because I'm looking at a hard copy). John Paul II reached out to everyone, absolutely everyone.

"John Paul II made the renunciation of coercive force the political center of his pontificate (explaining his role in the nonviolence of the Polish resistance movement and in framing Gorbachev's ability to respond peacefully to democratic opposition to communism). ...(and) Healing the ancient breach with Judaism became the most important project of his pontificate: rooting out anti-Semitic themes from Christian educational materials; visiting synagogues; lifting up the Holocaust as a permanent point of moral reckoning; affirming the right of Jews to be at home in Israel..." (and through that, transforming the future of the Church's relationship with other faiths as well).

This stuff is huge. We get so used to resisting the American wingnuts and their constant blathering about the "culture of life" while they support war, the death penalty, and your neighborhood's arms race... All they seem to mean by "culture of life" is doing away with contraceptives, teen sex education, and abortion (which will magically disappear when the first two are gone).

I disagreed with the Pope on some significant issues, but I'm here to tell you that when he talked about a "culture of life" he meant all of it: social justice for the poor, food and education for children, and the renunciation of violence in all its forms. No more war. No more torture. Take that, Dubya, and your little Torquemada, too.

"At the millennium," writes James Carroll, "John Paul II expressed sorrow for the two historic crimes of Christianity--the use of coercion in defense of the truth and the tradition of contempt for the Jewish people. But this Pope did more than say he was sorry. He put in place new structures of belief and practice, affirming peace and advancing tolerance, changing the Roman Catholic Church forever."

Amen to that.

Would it have been so hard for someone in the broadcast MSM to have said that?

Hekate

11. I have to say it was one of Jon's all time best ever yet.
Don't miss it. It was sharp and cutting.

Thank you Jon Stewart.

I did listen to AAR all day though, what fun. We here in dallas are in a wasteland and have been for a long time.

Most fun today for me was when I heard Randi R. sing a song to the tune of "Lost on Gilligan's Isle". The lyrics she sang to the tune were all about Delay and his trip to Saipan.

I laughed until I cried, but Jon tonight was just ICING on my cake!

(I just wish Lewis B. had been harsher)

...I want to thank Jon Stewart for putting graverobbing WASPs like Scott McClellan and Super-Honky-Wannabees like Pete Domenici and Neil Cavuto in their place.

BRAVO!!!

...and no offense meant to those WASPs out there who aren't using the Pope's death to put their own self-serving words into his mouth.

Way to go Jon and Lewis!

"Culture of Death" would accurately describe who the neocons really are and we can't have reality!

That's why they have stolen the pope's choice of words and are now spouting it off every chance they get.

Isn't that a mortal sin?

Doesn't matter...they're all going to hell anyways. They're just a bunch of evil people.

...what else is on, at 11 pm I switch to The Daily Show. Actually, I tivo it so that I have to choose not to. On occasion they miss the mark, but night-in, night-out, they make my day. It's sick to think that it's come to this, but laughing at these bastards - bushco, that is - is the main thing that keeps us sane. Sad, but sane.

By the way, I predict that the campus repigs will turn out to protest The University of Georgia's, Henry W. Grady School of Journalism's awarding a Peabody to Jon Stewart and The Daily Show for their work on last year's election...along with CBS's treatment of the Iraqi prison tortures...clearly just another example of campus liberalness that must be brought down.

36. Use Real Alternative, NOT Real Player!
The RealPlayer is one of the worst examples of "foistware" in existence. That player constantly bombards you with ads for their "great" features and paid upgrades.

Get the Real Alternative player from this URL:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm

It not only plays nearly all Real Media material beautifully, it also substitutes for Microsoft's increasingly bloated Media Player. And it happens to play this clip just beautifully.
